Overview

The Maldives sits in the Indian Ocean comprising of 26 round atolls made up of more than 1,000 coral islands.  Known for its beaches, it’s a popular place for holidays for those who want to relax and explore the lagoons.

The Problem

While tourists are keen to embrace nature and sit back and destress, they still want to stay connected.  To satisfy the needs of modern day voyagers, the largest telecommunication service provider in Maldives, Dhiraagu, was tasked with the initiative to provide Wi-Fi service across a variety of different tourist spots.

Given that Maldives is one of the world’s most dispersed countries, and most of the tourist attractions are widely open outdoor areas such as beaches, parks and piers, which have very limited sites to set up access points, this task couldn’t be handled by many brand name Wi-Fi suppliers in a cost-effective manner.

The Solution for Outdoor Wireless Networks

In response to Dhiraagu’s appeal, Altai offered Super Wi-Fi solution with Altai patented smart antenna which can support an outdoor Wi-Fi coverage as far as 1.7 km. This long-range coverage allows the project to equip significantly less APs than other competitors’ proposals, suitable for installation in outdoor open areas. The reduced amount of APs also led to a simpler but quicker deployment process and lowered the CAPEX as well as OPEX. Coverage for Altai products typically can provide up to 90% few installation sites for the same coverage area.

Surprising places with Wi-Fi

The availability of free Wi-Fi is no longer restricted to cafes, bars, restaurants, airports, shopping malls, pubs or hotels.  As the world goes hi-tech, you will be able to find free internet at places where you least expect it. Here are some unusual places across the globe where you will find free Wi-Fi.

Mount Everest Peak

The world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, became Internet friendly in 2010 when Ncell, a Nepalese telecom company, provided it with 3G data connection. Climbers can now find Wi-Fi hotspots all along the trek, to a height of 17,000 feet – the last point where you can take that envious selfie and update your social media status.

The Moon

The moon may not offer you breathable air but it does promise you a Wi-Fi hotspot! The feat was made possible by the researchers from MIT (Lincoln Laboratory) and NASA. Four separate telescopes were put in used to send signals to a satellite that revolves around the moon. This satellite had a receiver mounted on it. The scientists used a laser transmitter to beam data in the form of pulses of IR light through the four telescopes. The laser transmitter then transmits the IR rays to the telescope mounted on the satellite, which then collects and aims the beam into an optical fiber. These pulses are first converted into electrical pulses using a photodetector and then into data. This Wi-Fi hotspot makes it possible to transmit data between Earth and the moon at a rate of 19.44 mbps and to download it at a rate of 622 mbps.

The International Space Station (ISS)

If you are one of the lucky ones with a ticket to travel to the International Space Station, you don’t have to return back to Earth to share your experience with your friends. Yes, you guessed it right – the artificial satellite, ISS also has a Wi-Fi hotspot. The free internet works through the Ku-band, a satellite communications system that delivers output of around 10 mbps down and 3 mbps up from the space station.

The North Pole

Digital technology has made its presence felt in the remotest areas of the globe and the North Pole is no exception. One of the coldest places in the world, the North Pole too found Internet connectivity in 2005, when two Moscow-based Intel employees set up a Wi-Fi hotspot here, making it the first wireless connection in the Arctic region. They set up a wireless LAN connection with Intel Centrino mobile tech on four laptops and an 802.11b/g access point at the main camp site. The network connects to the internet via an Iridium satellite phone.

Mount Girnar

Mount Girnar, the tallest mountain in the Indian state of Gujrat is home to 30 temples and is a famous pilgrimage site. Pilgrim’s progress to the 1100-metre tall mountain was made Wi-Fi enabled making it easier for 25 lakh tourists to remain connected with their families, friends during the trek to the seven peaks of the mountain.

Remote Villages of UP (India)

The strong winds of the digital revolution that are sweeping through India, transformed the lives of 2000 villagers in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India, for whom, till then, the nearest telephone was 6 kms away.  The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, as part of its Digital Gangetic Plain Project, ensured WiFi connectivity to 10 villages located near the Lucknow-Kanpur highway, making the area a lone island of connectivity in a sea of rural roads, rice fields and thatched roofs.

Cemeteries

Strange as it sounds but Oak Grove cemetery in Paducah, Kentucky has a free Wi-Fi hotspot.  The area was made Wi-Fi-enabled to allow visitors to conduct genealogy research and know more about the people who were buried there. On a similar note, free Wi-Fi connectivity is also provided in San José Cemetery in Granada, Spain.

Mount Fuji

The iconic Mount Fuji Mountain in Japan was made Internet-friendly with the launch of eight Wi-Fi spots all along the climb route including one on the summit. Officials say that the move was in response to the requests from American and European tourists who wanted to share their experiences with family and friends while on the move. Besides, the authorities also wanted to attract more visitors to the mountain.

Donkeys, Kfar Kedem, Israel

You read it right — Wi-Fi hotspots on donkeys! The innovative move was made a few years back in the historical amusement park in Israel. The park attempts to create life from the first and second centuries AD. The donkeys carry a small bag containing a router around their necks. The tourists can document their experience and share it on the social media.

Val d’Isere, France

If you are looking for the best selfies on a holiday, Val d’Isere, in France is a great place to head to. The place now offers a Wi-Fi gondola and so now you can take photos of the stunning views from your ski lift and post them straight to your Facebook.

Hotel Wi-Fi Parking Management System

It is always the commitment of a hotel to provide its guests with high quality services. The Four Points by Sheraton in Puchong, Malaysia always strives to enhance total customer satisfaction and one of its projects was to improve the parking ticket verification system.

The Challenge

– Lack of Ethernet ports in the hotel lobby and event floor
– Very short deployment time
– Limited sites for installation (without complicated wiring and renovation work)

Overview – Hotel Wi-Fi Parking Solution

The hotel guests normally need to verify their parking tickets at the reception counter to enjoy free parking before they drive away from the car park. However, the queue time is very long at the counter during peak hours (such as check-in/out time) or whenever there is an event held in the hotel.

Therefore, the hotel appointed a local Altai solutions provider to design and build a total solution to shorten the parking ticket verification time. Since the hotel lobby is lacking Ethernet ports, in order to minimise the wiring and renovation work it was decided to deploy a total wireless solution.

Connecting the main ticket machine at the hotel together with the reception counter and event floor, the Wi-Fi network allows guests to verify their parking tickets anywhere in the lobby or event floor via a handheld verification terminal. The new solution has significantly improved the parking ticket verification procedure.

There are four Altai C1n’s used to interconnect the hotel wi-fi parking ticket verification system. One C1n in AP mode is installed on the top of main ticketing machine at the hotel to connect with another two C1n’s installed at the reception counter and the event floor. Owing to the size of the hotel lobby, an additional C1n is installed in the reception counter as a CPE to extend the WiFi signal to provide full network coverage. As the solution did not require complicated wiring nor renovation work, the installation was completed in only two days.

The Result

The main ticketing machine, hotel lobby, reception counter and event floor are now connected with a Altai Super WiFi network. This new wireless solution provides higher flexibility to both hotel guests and staff. Instead of queuing up at the reception counter, hotel guests can verify their parking tickets through any hotel staff via handheld verification terminals and then go direct to the car park. It has significantly enhanced the overall efficiency and improved the service quality of the hotel.

Long Range Wi-Fi Networks – NSW Recreation Centres

The motto of the NSW Government Office of Sport and Recreation is “More People, More Active, More Often” ….and now they can add “More Wi-Fi” to this slogan.

The Sport and Recreation Department has 11 Centres across NSW, set in the most beautiful scenic river, beach, bush or alpine locations. Visitors can choose from the serene beauty of the Hawkesbury River and Lake Macquarie, to the relaxed banks of Lake Ainsworth, the snow country of Jindabyne and pastoral serenity of Borambola, Lake Burrendong and Lake Keepit. Each Centre offers a variety of activities and programs that take advantage of the unique features of their location and facilities.

Recently the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation decided to completely review their communication systems for sporting/recreation facilities across NSW; some of the sites had basic Wi-Fi giving limited site coverage but in general the existing set-up didn’t cover the requirements of guests or staff.

Business Needs

The planning and install was undertaken by Advanced Communications Riverina with Stephen Hood as the lead contact. Their brief from the client was to update the existing system to achieve full site coverage, including long range Wi-Fi networks, monitor data usage, collect data plus set up a separate corporate network separate from both the visitor and guest networks.

This was a big project with the following sites planned to be updated – and all connecting – with one of the first sites being Sydney Academy in Narrabeen:

  • Berry
  • Borambola
  • Jindabyne
  • Lake Ainsworth
  • Myuna Bay
  • Point Wolstoncroft
  • Sydney Academy
  • Sydney International Regatta Centre
  • Sydney International Equestrian Centre
  • Sydney International Shooting Centre
  • Sport House

The Challenges

  • Large size and long range Wi-Fi requirements of the sites; coverage numbers for Wi-Fi use ranged from 250 people per site through to over 1000 at some of the Olympic Venues.
  • Foliage/trees limiting RF transmission
  • Sarking (building felt fixed over the rafters of a roof underneath tiles of slate) was discovered wrapped around the walls in the building. This is normally just found underneath roof tiles but results in reflecting RF signal away from the buildings.
  • Large concrete buildings with bunkers (shooting centre)

The Process and Solution

To manage this large project there were a number of steps needing to be done for each site with the first site being Sydney Academy of Sport in Narabeen.  This site was used as the template for moving forward though there were specific challenges to each that needed to be addressed:

Basic steps undertaken for the project included:

  • Full consult with the client to understand their networking requirements particularly how they wanted the corporate and guest visitor networks to run.
  • On-site survey to determine potential challenges for the outdoor Wi-Fi, the best locations and the equipment needing to be used
  • Off-site mapping to determine the best coverage area and planning for the challenges
  • Careful integration and testing of VLANS on site.
  • Design of public Wi-Fi splash pages for each site, ensuring terms & conditions of client were met.

Network Management Solution

Outdoor Wi-Fi

The AltaiCare cloud management system was deployed to provide network management and differing levels of Authentication for Wi-Fi users.

  • SSID 1 for general public access internet usage, with monitored bandwidth, data allowance and secure internet access for groups of users.
  • SSID 2 was for administrative purposes with a suppressed SSID. Other users will not be able to discover this network and it is the only one that allows access to business equipment utilised by staff. It was routed via the pre-existing Corporate Network
  • SSID 3 was the management VLAN for the wireless backhaul, AP and network management.

AltaiCare Data Management was set up and run as a test at the Narabeen site to finalise management requirements before being rolled out to the remaining sites.

Accommodation Park Wifi Case Study

The mining company currently using the site for its FIFO workers noticed that the moral of the workers had increased greatly after the Park WiFi installation due to staff ability to maintain communications with family and friends back home.

Business Profile

The town of Wandoan is situated midway between Brisbane (389kms south east) and Rockhampton (376km North East).  Not a big town, at the 2011 census, Wandoan had a population of 665.  One notable Australian who grew up in the town is Australian, Queensland and Brisbane rugby league captain Darren Lockyer.

The town’s economy is traditionally (since 1853) based on agriculture, including wheat and cattle with mining for coal and gas, growing industries.

The Wandoan Accommodation Park, is just off the Leichhardt Highway on a very popular inland route north heading towards tropical Queensland.  The 3.5 acre landscaped Park caters for caravans and camping but also provides 3 to 4 star cabins, suites and apartments for those who prefer to maintain their standards whilst getting back to nature.

With the rise of mining in the area, the Wandoan Accommodation Park has of late been used to house mining staff while they work on site on a fly in, fly out basis.

It is usual for a fly in, fly out job to involve longer shifts with little recreation facilities available to staff. However to attract and retain staff, accommodation facilities now need to ensure there are improved after hours facilities available.  By and large, Wandoan Accommodation Park provided an excellent base for staff with a pool, restaurant, BBQ’s and more available to while away the hours while working and away from their homes and families.  The one area the Park did not excel in was provision of Park WiFi services.

Due to the construction of the accommodation the buildings (dongas), signal penetration with traditional access points was intermittent at best which lead to poor user experience.

After site visit and review by telecommunications expert Daniel Davis from Darktime Computer Services, coverage plans were produced and once agreed upon, install was undertaken.

2 x A2Ei – 2.4GHz used for client access and 5GHz used for back haul. The Altai A2-Ei WiFi Dual-band Access Point is designed to be used in Altai Super WiFi systems to provide 2.4 and 5 GHz dual-band dual-concurrent access coverage for both outdoor and indoor areas, and to increase system capacity, extend coverage, fill-in areas of low or blocked signals caused by obstructions. It is capable of providing the highest possible data throughput and capacity that the 802.11n standards can offer.

14 x C1n – In back to back mode complementing Altai’s super Wi-Fi base station coverage solution are the C1n high-performance CPEs, which employ a patented smart-signal processing algorithm and an antenna designed to increase Wi-Fi signal strength (transmission and reception) as well as the client’s throughput.

AltaiCare – AltaiCare is a cloud-based network management and service control software system. Guest Wi-Fi – Like it or not, this is the age of ‘bring your own device’ (BYOD).

Making connection easy for your guests should be on the top of every list for every hotel, motel or airbnb – large or small operation.

Today’s guests arrive with their own online subscriptions and content, most have a clear idea of what they want and what they are accustomed to. They want to be able to view their regular news or social media updates and access content on one of their favourite apps and catch up channels such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Stan, YouTube, and more.

New content is always going online and more guests will want to access it on their own devices, not to mention business travellers with individual needs. Accommodation providers that enable their guests to connect to the web’s unlimited resources will offer a more varied and personal service.

Spiking demand for connectivity is placing an enormous burden on many hotel wifi networks and pressuring accommodation providers to invest in modern infrastructure. Connected Guest Wi-Fi

Guest reviews on TripAdvisor and the emergence of dedicated wifi-ranking websites have been tracking interest in hotel wifi.

Guest room technology specialist Brendon Granger, the general manager of Technology4Hotels, agreed that we are living in the age of BYOD: “Guest’s arrive at a hotel with a myriad of communication and entertainment devices. We are now living in a society obsessed and reliant on its gadgets. These gadgets keep us both connected and entertained.

“Hotel guests bring devices with them and are watching their own movies and programs in the comfort of their room. Why do they want to use their own devices? Because they have spent time and money loading their ‘life’ onto their devices and they know how they work.”

He told us: “I believe that increasingly, in-room technology is less about what hotels provide (IPTV and pay-per-view movies) and more about accommodating what guests are bringing with them. The key for hotels is to provide them with the power, infrastructure and the bandwidth to achieve this.”

According to Mr Granger, the factors that accommodation providers should consider when catering for BYOD include power, internet connectivity, bandwidth and infrastructure/hardware.

Australians Embrace Guest Wi-Fi – Survey

Here at Powertec we’ve noticed a huge turnaround in the accommodation industry – where paid guest Wi-Fi was once the norm, free Wi-Fi has taken over and is now considered a cost of doing business.

Tourist Accommodation Australia (TAA) has recently undertaken an industry wide Wi-Fi survey of 3, 4 and 5 star hotels and serviced apartments revealed that 96% properties surveyed offer some level of free Wi-Fi to guests.

Responses from the survey revealed that:

  • 99 per cent of hotels currently offer Wi-Fi as a service to guests.
  • The majority of hotels (65 per cent) do not charge for some level of free Wi-Fi access.
  • A further 31 per cent offer it free to customers on a conditional basis (such as loyalty program member, upon booking direct, special inclusion)
  • Less than 5 per cent of hotels require all guests to pay for Wi-Fi.

In the past two years, major Australian hotel groups such as Rydges and Meriton have introduced across-the-board free internet access, while other groups have extended free Wi-Fi access to loyalty club members.

Tourism Accommodation Australia CEO, Carol Giuseppi, said that there had been a “revolution” in Australian hotels over the past few years with the number of hotels offering some form of free internet access to guests more than doubling. “Today, guests at most hotels in Australia have access to some level of free Wi-Fi coverage, particularly if they are members of a loyalty scheme or have arranged free access via a corporate or conference account,” said Ms Giuseppi. “In the past few years, hotels have had to upgrade their internet provision dramatically as the demand for connectivity has increased with guests often operating multiple devices and demanding ever-increasing bandwidth.

“Hotels generally accept that a level of internet access should be provided free so that guests can answer emails or update their social media channels, but when guests want to download or stream items requiring massive bandwidth then it is only fair that they should pay for premium bandwidth usage.

“To offset the high cost of internet provision, hotel groups are more likely to provide access for guests who are members of their loyalty club, so we would recommend travellers join the wide range of hotel loyalty clubs that are available. “Providing high-quality, fast, efficient and secure internet service is an important requirement for guests. Australian hotels have answered demands by guests by extending internet access and our industry is now on par with most hotel sectors around the world.”

*TAA received responses from over 300 accommodation providers across Australia to their wi-fi survey, representing 3 to 5 star hotels and serviced apartment operators.
